As we have just changed time, perhaps it is valuable to look at the effects of day-night rhythms on performance.  This intriguing article in the WS Journal will give some food for thought and perhaps better planning of precious time.

Tips for making your office environment more civil:

  • Address performance or other issues in private.
  • Don’t criticize people behind their backs. Never say or write anything you wouldn’t be proud to sign.
  • In the presence of co-workers practice the 10/5 rule: Within 10 feet, acknowledge the person, and within five feet say hello.
  • Don’t take an employee’s contributions for granted; make it a point to thank them.
  • Be careful taking too much credit for collaborative work; share recognition for work well done.
  • Never cut off or finish someone’s sentences (even to make a point or decision); instead be patient and listen fully before jumping in.
  • Instead of pointing the finger when you’ve contributed to a mistake, take responsibility-especially if you’re the leader.
  • When dealing with conflict, performance issues, or other emotionally-laden matters, use face-to-face communication in lieu of email.
  • When someone is talking to you, pay attention and listen fully; don’t half tune in or fidget with your gadget.
  • Resist the temptation to send unprofessional emails. If it isn’t work-appropriate, don’t say it or send it all.

Occasionally I see an article that tickles my funny bone (wherever that is). Scott Adams has such an article in the WSJ last week entitled Scott Adam’s Secret of Success: Failure.  Here are some of his main points: Beware of advice from successful people, you are not them and the world is very complex. Be careful of where following your passion leads you. Use systems not goals. Luck is important and he suggests some ideas about how to improve your luck. Read the article, it’s full of good advice and it’s a hoot.

Human Behavior is Reciprocal

or what you give is what you get.  Self-esteem is a result of behavior, not a cause.  This is why in the absence of competence, respect or integrity, self-esteem development is a behavioral dead-end.  People who believe they are competent, respectful or honest when they are not are likely to have that belief pounded out of them by reality.  Fortunately reality, if you pay attention, is a very good teacher.  If two parties in a failed relationship are both working on rebuilding the relationship, the outcome will likely be quite satisfactory to both.  These comments were catalyzed by a recent article in the WSJ entitled How to Handle a Run on the Friendship Bank.  Take the time for a good read.

Gallup Does It Again: Love Your Job

The Sunday NYTimes has a great article on how to reshape your

job to one you love.  The recommendations come from a Gallup

study of 8,000 workers who love their jobs.   Such people:

·      •Use their strengths every day, as do their co-workers.

·      • Feel that they are an important part of their organization’s future.

·      • Are surrounded by colleagues who care about their overall well-being.

·      • Are excited about the future because of a leader’s enthusiasm and vision.
