Some principles I have learned in my 25+ years of working with managers and leaders:
Management is hard work. Management is principle based. Management can only be learned by doing: Act – observe – reflect – readjust – execute. People who read the effects of their behavior and re-adjust get “smarter.”
Leadership is like pornography – it’s easy to identify but hard to define. Leaders come in many flavors and over the years many theories and descriptions of leaders have been suggested. Most feel like “walking on water” and are useless to guiding people toward developing their leadership ability. Leaders appear to have only one common characteristic: They have no common characteristics.
